Sounds ominous

I read that Melbourne is going to be hosting something called the “Australian Catholic Youth Festival” in December 2013.

The Festival will be held in the Archdiocese of Melbourne from Thursday December 5 to Saturday December 7 and gather up to 4000 young Catholics from year 9 students to those 25 years of age.

This would seem to be a concept not dissimilar to say for example a Bikie gang organising a women’s equality event, or the Mafia doing a fundraiser for victims of organised crime. I must say I cringe a little when I think about the Catholic Church, this pedophilia-enabling and-obscuring institution, organising any youth events at all. Until recently, the maximum penalty for canine homicide, a technical and rather unemotional term for describing the fact that someone’s dog killed a human, was 19700.-AUD. After the string of fatal pitbull attacks here in the last 18 months, the Domestic Animals Act was revised, and now the maximum penalty finally involves jail time. Continue reading

The Pussy Riot scandal

It’s been 5 months now that members of the punk band Pussy Riot walked into the most important Orthodox Church in Russia, the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow, and performed for a few seconds whay they called a punk prayer, asking “Our Lady, chase Putin out”, and asked the Patriarch to “believe in God and not in Putin”. Security guards quickly picked them up, it took about a minute and half all in all, and they have been detained in a Moscow prison ever since. In the trial that is starting this Monday, July 30, the three band members are facing up to 7 years prison colony, the same punishment that is usually handed out to rapists in that country.
