Star Trek – Into Dreadfulness

I’ve seen it now. Paid my 15 bucks. It was of course inevitable, but I still wish I hadn’t. Because Star Trek – Into Darkness is horrible. It’s what George Lucas would do to the franchise to cause it the most possible damage, was he given the opportunity. Well, turns out J.J. Abrams does a fine demolition job without Lucas.

On the plus side, Karl Urban as McCoy and whoever plays Sulu do a fine job, and come fairly close to the original character. Simon Pegg does what he can with the script and pulls off a half-decent Scotty, and Zoe Saldana as Uhura manages to look dignified despite the embarrassing mini-skirt.

But Chris Pine is just not James T Kirk. Put him into a yellow jumper and make him swing about his torso all you like, he ain’t Jim Kirk. Pine takes this job seriously in an irony-free way, he is more Hulk and Ripley than Kirk. And Zachery Quinto plays the part of Spock without any hint of irony or self-reflection, it is a great pity to see one of the most fascinating and iconic Sci-Fi characters of all times wasted in such a way.

From “to explore new worlds and seek out new civilisations”, Star Trek has devolved into “to wreck the Enterprise and yet emerge victorious by killing bad guys who are so one-dimensional as to make Predator look sophisticated”.

Fuck that shit. Here are the real captains of the Enterprise talking to Whoopi Goldberg:

A new Star Trek portal on Wikia

According to Mashable,

Rod Roddenberry, son of Star Trek mastermind Gene Roddenberry and series actress Majel Barrett, has partnered with Wikia to launch the first-ever Roddenberry Entertainment-sanctioned Star Trek portal.

The Trek Initiative, as it’s called, is for fans, Roddenberry said. “For years, I — we — have always admired the fans. They came together to save Star Trek through letter-writing campaign … and they’ve kept the Roddenberry family and Star Trek in the limelight.”

The Trek Initiative portal can be found here. Love the fan films so far!

Oh, and here’s the newest trailer for the upcoming movie Star Trek – Into Darkness, published a few days ago:

Americans get to watch almost all Star Trek for free this month!

I’m a bit annoyed by this! US net streaming company Hulu has announced that on the occasion of William Shatner’s birthday they are letting their American customers access 693 episodes across the Star Trek franchises for free until the end of the month. And they also ask for your participation in settling a question about as timeless as that of which is the best Linux distro:

We need your help to settle once and for all the most important question you will be asked all day: Who is the greatest Star Trek character of all time? Starting tomorrow, and running every day through March 31st, check Hulu’s Tumblr for your opportunity to vote for your favorite Star Trek characters. Continue reading
