The Christian Bible is full of sex. Everyone is doing it, all the time, and never mind marriage, father with daughter, father with son, daughters with father, cousins, father with daughter-in-law, brother with sister or half-sister. And that’s just the incestuous ones. The parents of Mary had sex before they produced Jesus’ mother, it’s just that the Catholic Church decreed in 1854 that their sex, and hence Mary’s creation, happened “without sin”.
So whenever you hear people like the crazies from “True Love Waits” talk about abstinence, and preach the silly concept of “purity” to young adults (apparently, 3 million youth have signed one of their “commitment cards”), you must realize that they are full of shit, and cherrypicking from a text in which pretty much everyone is having sex all the time.
Abstinence serves no purpose, what has to happen instead is that we teach teenagers to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease, that we talk about the dangers of drugs and alcohol with regards to sexual behaviour, and that we teach them about consent and respect. Because there isn’t much of that in the Bible.

Sex sex & more sex. The churches and the many varied flavours of religious belief have a strange fetish about sex. Did anyone see “Sunrise” this morning? An archbish..thingy or what’s the other one, err..cardinal or something from Perth said that same sex marriage will lead to a breakdown in society and other hate filled nonsense. To counter the archbish’s crap and that of the talking head from the ACL in studio, they had Dr. Keryn Phelps on to present the other point of view. The good doctor was excellent. She used a line like “the haters are complaining about being hated” Or words to that effect. It’s worth a look at the Channel 7 web site.
I was going to say that the “gay marriage will lead to the breakdown of society” claim is going to become pretty difficult to defend when already lots of societies have legalised gay marriage and have seen a complete absence of societal breakdown as a result. Then I realised that they still make the same kind of claim about atheism, despite the fact that there is a really obvious correlation between religiosity and societal dysfunction.
They really are totally blind to the screaming obvious.
