Christian Dominionism – a clear and present danger in Australia

I mentioned Jim Wallace, the head of a lobby organisation called the Australian Christian Lobby, yesterday with regards to his appearance on the Q & A program, and I said that we should not put him on the air, but in the air, and send him to the USA, where a rightwing homophobe like Wallace would feel right at home.
But the fact is that Wallace has a job to do here in Australia.
In an online article on the ABC Religion site, Chrys Stevenson protocols the connections between the ACL and the Dominionist movement, that has come out of the US and is no longer just an American problem :

From local parents and citizens associations to regional councils, from our previously secular state schools to state government departments and even within Parliament House, Canberra, this particular clique of evangelical Christian extremists is working quietly but assiduously to tear down the division between church and state, subvert secularism and reclaim this nation for Jesus.

But, is there sufficient evidence to suggest that the Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) is at the forefront of this ideological holy war?

In order to achieve their aim, dominionists plan to infiltrate, influence and eventually take over seven key spheres of society: business, government (including the military and the law), media, arts and entertainment, education, the family and religion.

This strategic approach to “taking territory” is part of the Reclaim 7 Mountains movement, to which the ACL subscribes. If it wasn’t so serious – and it if wasn’t working – it would be funny.

You should all read the whole article. People need to know about this, these folks, including Jim Wallace, are not just religious lobbyists. They are anti-democracy, and their declared goal is the infiltration of all areas of society, and ultimately a Christian theocracy.

Article on Christian Right Dominionism in the USA

A recent piece by Chip Berlet on Alternet is very much worth reading, titled “Inside the Christian Right Dominionist Movement That’s Undermining Democracy”.

Dominionists want to impose a form of Christian nationalism on the United States, a concept that was dismissed as eroding freedom and democracy by the founders of our country. Dominionism has become a major influence on the right-wing populist Tea Parties as Christian Right activists have flooded into the movement at the grassroots. At the same time, legitimate questions have been raised about whether or not potential Republican presidential nominees Rick Perry, Michelle Bachmann, or Sarah Palin have moved from a generic form of Christian Right Dominionism toward the more totalitarian form know as Dominion Theology.

A scary concept if there ever was one. Especially in a country where a conservative like Obama is already the only viable alternative to a whole gang of right-wing Christian extremists, who would seek to establish a theocracy today rather then tomorrow.
