The end of Dry July

I failed ! After 3 weeks of alcohol abstinence I gave up on project Dry July.
I think I simply got bored in the end. Green tea, black tea, milk with honey, orange juice, you can only drink so much of that stuff really, comes a point where the tastebuds need something more stimulating (that’s the reward system receptors in my brain rationalizing away…).

But it was a good experience, I learned that it is possible to do a week’s worth of housecleaning before 730am. I read a million books, and shed some kilos. Somehow I have a hunch that putting them back on will not be as difficult.

Dry July – Day 7

I’m still going okay. It’s the rituals and habits that provide temptation, but so far I have resisted them. Take for example last night, when I came home from work, Friday night, and the weekend off. Very tempting ! That Corona was really smiling at me. But instead of a beer and a bowl of salted peanuts, I had a cup of black tea with milk and a bisquit. Satisfying in its own way.

The other thing I note is how much alcohol permeates our culture and everyday life, how often people talk about drinking, how much advertising there is that makes drinking look hip and pretty, how much booze there is around us and easily accessible.

You can still join me for, or support me during the rest of Dry July !

Dry July – Day 1

dryjuly 212x300 Dry July Day 1
There is still time to join me for Dry July, especially if you live in the Northern Hemisphere ! I’ve just finished Day 1, one down, thirty to go. Today wasn’t much of a challenge, I had planned for a quiet evening anyway, but we shall see how it goes in the coming days and weeks ! I will take this one day at a time, and if I fail, then I have at least managed a few days without alcohol, but my goal is definetely to stay the course.

You can still join in, sign up and get yourself sponsors and supporters to collect money to be donated towards projects that support adult cancer patients, or just do it for the health benefits, the weight loss, or the personal challenge ! I think I’m looking forward to Day 2, actually !
