Religion is needed for morality – Episode XXV

On the day we learn that the Catholic Archdiocese of Boston now keeps a record of their clergy sex offenders, we also get news that 8 members of a Mennonite Protestant sect in Bolivia were convicted to lengthy prison terms for the repeated mass rape of up to 100 women :

Seven members of a reclusive Protestant sect in Bolivia have been sentenced to 25 years each in prison for raping 100 women in an agrarian commune.

An eighth man was sentenced to 12.5 years in prison for providing a narcotic that the men sprayed to render the women unconscious before raping them in their dormitories, said Judge Luis Enrique Perez.

“The victims were raped in a repeated manner. Among them, there were adults, children and elderly women,” prosecutor Freddy Perez was quoted as saying by El Dia newspaper.

The eight Mennonite men, aged between 18 and 45, were sentenced during a closed hearing this week at Palmasola prison in the Santa Cruz region.

Just two examples of religious people doing evil things. Religion is not a prerequisite for acting morally, never was and never will be. But religion and dogma get in the way of humans making moral decisions all the time, all over the world. Good people do bad things because of religion. I do not want this noxious garbage taught to our children.
