It’s remarkable that so many of the main sponsors of the Olympic Games are companies that produce processed foods or sugary beverages which are major contributors to the current obesity epidemic. Companies like Cadbury, Coca-Cola or McDonald’s get to feature prominently during the Olympics, although junk food sponsors contribute only around 2% of the IOC income according to a new report, and at the same time that worldclass, highly trained athletes compete for medals, kids will be visiting the events and will get fatter by eating chocolate bars and hamburgers, the bill for which then ultimately gets picked up by the taxpayer.
