That thread over at Butterflies and Wheels about the Jefferies routine at the GAC is still going on, and it has not been made any better by an invasion from ERV slimepit denizens. Anyway, I don’t have much to say about it other than “I told you so”, but for everyone still confused over why this routine was so devastating and terrible, and so utterly sent the wrong signal to female atheists and skeptics in my opinion, it is expressed in this comment I have taken from the B&W thread:
Regardless of his intent, the fact that it was not obvious that he was lampooning misogyny contributes to a sexist culture. Someone said it upthread in re Chapelle, when you realize that bigots view your schtick favorably, you are not being clear enough that your intent is to lampoon, and you are contributing to bigotry.
This is the basis of my problem with Jefferies in a nutshell. Or you could make it even easier, as Kylie pointed out, she (as a GAC presenter) and Stella Young were horrified by his performance. Surely something went wrong if performers and presenters of an event can feel horrified by a routine like that of Jefferies, half of the audience felt uncomfortable, and yet apparently nobody saw it coming.
